Pathanamthitta
Pathanamthitta is a combination of two word, 'pathanam' and 'thitta' which means a group of houses in the riverside. It is one of the youngest evolved districts in kerala, the district was formed in 1st November 1982. Pathanamthitta is a place in which all sorts of cultivations are performed, it is a place where all sorts of crops are grown. Pathanamthitta is known as the pilgrimage land. Sabarimala, one of the main pilgrimage center which is visited by thousands is situated in Pathanamthitta district, the people come from different part of the country to visit sabarimala, the Temple dedicated to the Hindu deity, Ayyappan. It is situated near the forests of Pathanamthitta. It is a place with lots of flora and fauna, the forest cover about 50% of the total area, Pathanamthitta district is rich in its wildlife habitats, Tigers, elephants, deers, monkeys and other wild animals are found in the dense forests of the district, the main forest are could be categorized as evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous. Giant squirrel, lion-tailed macaques and deer can be found in the forests. Many variety of birds are also found in the forest prone areas. Wide variety of other birds such as sun birds, woodpeckers and kingfishers can also be seen in this region. Pathanamthitta has a true tropical diversity in which the land is enrich with fertile suitable for the growth of crops. In the district of Pathanamthitta, wide varieties of vegetables and spices like cardamom, pepper etc. are extensively cultivated. It is said that the regions that presently come under the district of Pathanamthitta were under the reign of the Pandalam king of the Pandya kingdom. Pathanamthitta now includes portions of Kollam, Alappuzha and Idukki districts. The district is covered by an estimate of 2642 sq.kms; in which 1300.73 sq.kms comes under the forest region. Tourism is an important income of Pathanamthitta district, Aranmula, a beautiful village in Pathanamthitta district is recognized as the international tourism destination by the Union Government. Three main rivers through the heart namely, Pampa, Achankovil and manimala, these add to the beauty of the place. The mysterious forests surrounded by the Western Ghats provide a scope for trekking for the tourists. Another main attraction of the district is 'Aranmula kannadi', it is a mirror made of metal, it is made of 100% metal polished again and again to give it the perfect shine. The local dance centers at this place exhibits old kathakali and other cultural performances. The kakki reservoir is another tourist destination which gives the tourists an oppurtunity to cruize through the artificial lake and the splendid view of the surrounding forests. Waterfalls of perunthanaruvi cannot be missed as it gives a feeling of soothness to your mind, you will be dragged out of all the grief just by looking to the falls and feeling its freshness. It is located near the pampa river. The climatic conditions of Pathanamthitta are similar to elsewhere in kerala. The climate is suitable for the growth of cash crops and spices, which also adds to the income of Pathanamthitta. Aranmula 'vallom kali' is another main attraction of Pathanamthitta district, the boat race is conducted during the month of September, it is celebrated with great joy. Many snake boats participate in the boat race and it is considered as one of the important festival of Pathanamthitta. Aranmula boat race is unique because of the different shape of the boats used in the race. The climate of Pathanamthitta is similar to the rest of kerala, here a lot of people come in some period of the year to enjoy the season, the climate, the mountains and the forest. The main thing about Pathanamthitta that makes it a tourist destination is the vast and dense forest and the diversified wildlife of the region. |
