Kozhikod

kozhikod is known as the land of kalarippayattu, kalarippayattu is a martial art of Kerala, the district is famous for folk songs of ancient culture known as vadakkan pattukal, in those songs, there are exploits of 'Thacholi Othenan', mappilapattu and oppana are the other cultures of muslims in the area, these songs are made by a combination of Malayalam and Arabic. Kozhikod is mainly a land of celebrations. There are many 'kalari' (school of martial arts) for practicing Kalaripayattu, kalarippayattu is one of the oldest known martial art in the whole world. It was used by the warfare of 'Cheras' and 'Cholas' of the 11th century, mainly northern kalarippayattu is practiced in kozhikod district.

Kozhikode has generally a hot and humid climate,humidity is high in these region especially in the time of march to may. Kozhikod gets rain from the south west monsoon. The climate is apt during the period of November to January. As Kozhikode is a coastal region, humidity is a bit high which adds to the temperature. The climate is good for the growth of onion, turnips, ginger and eggplants.

In Kozhikode the main area for trade is in a place known as 'mithai theruvu', it is an ancient market present in the district of kozhikod, the market got it name from the famous 'kozhikodan halwa', a sweet dessert which is fluffy, the Europeans used to call it 'The Sweet Meat'. The mithai theruvu is the place you can buy anything such as cosmetics, flowers, eatables and dresses. Kozhikode has a rich tradition in the making of silk goods, silk worms are cultured and silk is made colored and exported as finish goods and as materials. Kozhikode bacame the center of an indpendent kingdom in the 14th century, and the ruler of the kingdom was Zamorin. The main visitor of the coasts of Kozhikode was Vasco da Gama, he landed at kappad in 1498, he was a trade visitor who came from Portugal, Zamorin himself came to welcome the visitor. There were visit by the Dutch after this, the Dutch captured the trade of malabar coast spices in the middle of 17th century.
