Backwaters of Kerala
Kerala is a land which one of the main tourist attraction of India, Kerala is rich with many lakes which are linked by canals, there are 38 rivers in the region which makes it extending half the length of the Kerala state. There are many canals, lagoons and rivers in Kerala, these water bodies are together known as backwaters, the backwaters of Kerala gives us a magnificent view of the nature, the backwaters consist of freshwater which meats the sea water from the Arabian sea. There are barriers built in certain areas to keep the freshwater water in the water bodies safe. The water from the backwaters are used for irrigation. The backwaters of Kerala are lined with coconut trees, palms and various leafy plants alongside the barriers, giving it an enchanting view, the people living near to the backwaters has a different type of lifestyle due to the peculiar landscape of the region, backwaters are formed by wave and the shore currents making low barrier islands across the rivers, these are the main attraction which drags tourists to the state.
There are many species such as frogs, crabs, mudskippers, darters, turtles and kingfishers living in the backwaters of Kerala, there are many freshwater fishes which live in the backwaters, the people living in the surrounding region make a living by fishing and selling these fishes. Vembanad kayal(lake) is Indias longest lake, the lake is bordered by Kottayam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam, it covers an area of 200 square kilometers.
Kettuvallams are the huge cargo boats which are now converted to 'house boats', these boats are the main attraction for any tourists who come to visit Kerala backwaters, these boats allow the visitors to cruise through the backwaters of Kerala, they are available for rent in daily basis or you can even hire them for a more days if you like. The main thing which governs the growth of tourism in Kerala are the backwaters, t here are steps taken from the government to conserve the backwaters and allow tourists to explore its beauty.
There are many resorts that are emerging in the region which makes it a great tourist loving region, now the land that are residing near the backwaters are transformed into busy tourist destinations, one of the finest backwaters of Kerala are found in alappuzha and also in kumarakam, these are the areas which offers a cool recreation for your mind and eyes.
